Dr. Laura Hernandez

The fun stuff…

My name is Laura Hernandez. I love spending time with my husband, son, and two daughters. They are my heart!  I enjoy the beach, gardening, yoga, and meditation.  I love Golden Retrievers!  Their friendly nature, happy tail, and soft fur make them extra special:)

The nitty gritty…

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor and a Nationally Certified Counselor.  I earned my Masters degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and my Doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision.  While earning my Ph.D., I focused my research on exploring ways to help children and adolescents who are experiencing anxiety.  I have 19 years of experience in school settings, as an educator, administrator, and counselor.  I counsel individuals to help them develop skills to be the best version of themselves.  These include developing coping skills, social skills, managing strong emotions, developing techniques to manage anxiety, and counseling individuals who have experienced grief and loss in their lives.

I counsel through a person-centered approach and often utilize cognitive behavioral therapy in counseling sessions.  We can journey together to help you move gracefully through life letting things go or we can work together to develop grit if a situation requires you to go deeper to work through something.

Developing our superpowers…

Working with children and adolescents is such a blessing because I have an opportunity to counsel these precious souls while their mind and emotions are growing and developing.  It is great to meet these awesome young people where they are and help them discover their strengths (such unique, awesome strengths!) and work to empower them with awareness of their areas of growth.  Teaching and counseling them to understand that what they see as their “weakness”, or what is holding them back from accomplishing their goals, can become their superpower.  Counseling can help children and adolescents grow and develop into who they are meant to be.

The deep stuff…

I have discovered throughout my counseling career that struggle often comes from resisting change and peacefulness results from learning that the only constant in life is that it will continue to change.  Remember the saying “this too shall pass.”  The skills we develop to help us navigate these waves of change become our superpower.  Learning to go with the flow of life so as not to have our “boat” capsize but rather sway with the waves of change.  The more I live, read, counsel, listen, and learn, I realize how resistance becomes and creates suffering beyond the actual thing that we are suffering from.  Counseling can help.  Many of us understand and know this but knowing how to implement it in our own lives or our children’s lives becomes another story altogether.  Counseling can help us develop new ways of looking at and thinking about situations and experiences.  These new ways of looking at things can help enhance the important relationships in our children’s lives and our own lives.  Changing our thinking can lead to changes in behavior, and before we know it, we are creating and becoming a better version of ourselves.  Living a life full of awareness, joy, peace, and less resistance.
